Purpose of Grant
This grant will be used to bring individual computer access to students and school staff in the classroom, as well as to increase general productivity and expand the technological literacy. Thereby giving students a competitive edge in the future job market.

Brief description of request
We are requesting this grant to secure funds that will be used to purchase and distribute Palm Pilots to the junior high and high school students of Flint Southwestern Academy.

Problem definition or needs assessment
There is a drastic shortage of computer availability in Flint Southwestern Academy today. There are families throughout the district that do not have adequate access to computer resources available to them on a daily basis. This problem leads to stereotypical assumption that socioeconomic levels determine success in academic areas. A belief that, if fostered by the current environment, could lead students to behaviors that have a tendency to further lead to criminal behavior.

The only way to address this problem is to make a variety of educational opportunities more commonly available to the average and impoverished students, as well as all others who are attending Flint Southwestern Academy.

Proposed Project
If funded, Flint Southwestern Academy will purchase Palm Pilots, which are currently not available in the school. These Palm pilots will be made available to all registered Flint Southwestern Academy students.

Program Methods
Palm Pilots will be purchased from the technology supplier with the most competitive bid.

Palm Pilots will be distributed to students on the first day of class, in the school library.

Pre-Program and Post-Program surveys will be conducted by program coordinators to measure increase in academic achievement.

Expected Results
It is fully expected that the average number of Palm Pilots that are currently available to students of Flint Southwestern Academy will increase by a margin of 90% over the academic calendar year.

Evaluation Methods
Pre-Program and Post-Program surveys will be conducted by program coordinators to measure increase in academic achievement.

These surveys will measure the time spent utilizing Pal Pilot Technology, as well as the correlation between student usage and gains in academic achievement.

These surveys will then be compared and evaluated together to measure the effectiveness of the program.

Timetable for this program
A total of twelve months has been budgeted for this program and will begin the Summer before the start of the 2004/2005 school year.
June – August 2004- Pre-Program market evaluation
June 2004- Purchase Palm Pilots
September 2004- Distribute Palm Pilots to students
June 2005- Post-Program market evaluation

History

Flint Southwestern Academy was built in 1959. Our school has been providing a sound education for 64 years.

Current Programs
Flint Southwestern Academy is accredited to teach middle school and high school curriculum to 7^th through 12^th grade regular education students.

Special Education - Our special education program is designed to educate Genesee county’s physically impaired, health impaired, hearing impaired, and cognitively impaired middle school and high school student population.

Population Served
Flint Southwestern Academy, which has a growing reputation for academic excellence, draws its student body of middle and high school students from throughout the city of Flint. The Academy places great emphasis on the traditional values of scholarship, courtesy, respect and citizenship, and is designed for students who do best under firm direction and adult guidance. Also, students who attend the Academy are expected to adhere to the school's dress code.

Several special education programs are housed at the Academy and serve students who are hearing impaired, visually impaired, and physically and otherwise health impaired. Parent involvement is key to the school's success.
