Introduction to Dragon Dictate Naturally
Speaking Software
Who uses this
Software?
This software is primarily used by individuals who have high cognitive skills, but lack coordination and fine motor skills, due to a physical disability.
What purpose does it
serve?
This voice recognition software enables people who have fine motor deficits to enter text on the computer via their voice, rather than using a keyboard. This allows for quick data entry with a lower level of frustration. This software makes it possible for individuals who could not utilize a computer keyboard, to write papers, respond to email and surf the internet.
What equipment is
needed?
1. A computer with a minimum of 256MB of RAM and a sound card
2. A version of Dragon Dictate Naturally Speaking Software
3. A headset microphone (A headset microphone comes with the software.)
How does it work?
Using Dragon Dictate is easy. First you must train the computer to recognize your voice. This is done through the training portion of the program, where users read a given text off of the screen as the program sets your volume, learns your voice pitch, and builds your vocabulary files.
Dragon dictate learns each individual’s speech patterns. As the user begins to use the software, the program learns the words that are most often used by the particular user. In the beginning, the program makes many errors, as the user corrects those errors Dragon learns the user’s vocabulary and fewer mistakes are made. The software will continue to make the same mistakes, unless the user takes the time to correct the errors. For this reason, it is important to correct all errors and to save voices files after every use. Using this software is often slow in the beginning as the user corrects errors, but in the long run, the results are worth it!
