Turning off Sleep Mode

Running Scan Disk

1. Make sure there are no open windows

2. Turn off screensaver

3. Shut down the programs in system tray.

4. Right click on the icons

5. Click exit.

 

Identifying Which Programs are running in the Background

1. Look at the icons in your system tray.

2. Each icon in your system tray represents a program that is running in the background

3. Temporarily turn those programs off by right clicking on each icon and closing the program.

4. Don't turn off anti-virus program.

5. Programs slowing down computer MSCONDIF by:

·        Clicking on Start

·        Click Run

·        Type MSCONFIG in run box

·        Click OK

6. Stop the programs from running by:

1. Right click on a blank spot on your taskbar

Maintaining Privacy When Sending Group E-mails

Files in Quarantine

1. Virus programs put the files in quarantine, to protect your computer from infection. 

2. If your computer will not run without one or more of those files, the virus program will be able to take them out of the quarantine and restore them. 

3. Once you know that your system is running fine without those files, simply delete them.

 

Make Outlook  Express the Default Mail Program

1. Open Outlook Express and click on "Tools"

2.  Click "Options".

3. Make sure you are looking at the "General" tab

4. Look for the "Default Messaging programs". 

5.. Click the button to the right of that sentence  "Make Default".

6. Click "OK"

7. Restart your computer.

 

Make Internet Explorer Your Default Web Browser

1. Click on "Start"

2. Go to  "Settings" 

3. Click on  "Control Panel".

4. Double click on the "Internet Options" icon in the control panel.

5. Click on the "Programs" tab at the top of the "Internet Properties" window.

6. At bottom of page, it will say, "Internet Explorer”. Check to see whether it is default browser".

7.Click to put a checkmark in the box to the left of sentence.

9. Reboot your computer.

10.  Open up Internet Explorer.

11. It will ask if you want to make it the default, click "Yes".

 

Thicker Window Borders

1. Right click on any blank area of the desktop

2.Choose Properties for the shortcut menu.

3. In the Display Properties dialog box, click the Appearance tab.

3. Pick Active Window Border.

4. In the adjacent Size box, click the up arrow and watch the example screen (try 6 to 8 for starters), stop.

5. Click OK.

 

Start without all the programs

 

1. Hold down the Shift key as soon as you see the wallpaper on your screen until Windows has finished booting.

2. Programs in your start up folder won't open until the next time you boot into windows.

Windows Housekeeping/Turning Your Computer Off  Properly

1. While waiting for your computer to give the OK to turn it off, it is busy putting things away ( electronic housekeeping ).

2. User who reboot properly a minimum of once a day experience very few problems.

3. When you just cut the power without a proper shutdown, Windows does not have time to put temporary files where they belong, or finish saving documents, or changes made to your registry.

4. Impatiently hitting the power button when done with the computer will start to see semi-regular "freezes" and illegal page faults.
